A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. has just become the most expensive video game ever sold, reaching an incredible $3 million at auction.
What makes this particular copy special isn’t just the game itself. According to the auction details, it’s believed to be the oldest confirmed sealed copy from the game’s second production run in 1986. It was reportedly discovered only a few months ago inside a brand-new NES Control Deck package and had remained untouched for nearly 40 years.
The game received a PSA 9.6 A++ grade, putting it in near-perfect condition. Collectors also point out that it features a specific early-production sticker seal that was only used for a short period before Nintendo changed the packaging in later releases.
Apparently, only three sealed copies from this production batch are known to exist today, and this one is considered the best-preserved example among them. The auction house even described it as the “holy grail” of video game collecting.
The previous record for a video game sale was $2 million, also held by a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. Back in 2021, another sealed copy of Super Mario 64 sold for $1.56 million, which at the time shocked the gaming world. This new sale pushes the record even further and shows that the market for ultra-rare gaming collectibles is still very much alive.
Personally, I find it fascinating that a cardboard box and a cartridge can be worth more than many houses. At the same time, if there are only a handful of copies left in this condition, I can understand why serious collectors are willing to pay these kinds of prices.
