What do you think about Valve ending physical Steam Gift Cards?

I get why Valve is doing this, but I’m still a little disappointed.

Physical Steam Gift Cards have been around for years and were one of the easiest gaming-related gifts you could buy for someone. You didn’t need to know what games they wanted, what hardware they had, or even much about PC gaming in general. Just grab a card from a store and you’re done.

At the same time, I understand Valve’s reasoning. Gift card scams have become incredibly common, and scammers are always finding new ways to trick people into buying and sending gift card codes. If physical cards are causing more problems than benefits, I can see why Valve would want to move entirely toward digital alternatives.

What I find interesting is that this feels like another step toward everything becoming digital. It makes sense from a security and convenience standpoint, but there’s still something nice about having a physical gift to hand someone on a birthday or during the holidays. A digital email just doesn’t feel quite the same.

Personally, I haven’t bought a physical Steam card in a long time, but I’m surprised they’re disappearing completely. I imagine there are still plenty of people who use them, especially parents and relatives who aren’t familiar with Steam’s digital gifting system.

Do you think Valve made the right decision, or should they have tried other ways to combat scams while keeping physical gift cards available?
