Honestly, this wasn’t on many people’s bingo cards for 2027.
CD PROJEKT RED has officially announced a brand-new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt called:
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past
Yep, Geralt is coming back again.
The announcement was posted through the official Witcher channels with the line:
“Medallion’s humming… that can only mean one thing!”
And for long-time Witcher fans, that sentence alone was enough to send the internet into chaos for a few hours.
Geralt Returns One More Time
What makes this reveal interesting is the timing.
CDPR is already moving forward with The Witcher 4, where the focus is expected to shift heavily toward Ciri and a new saga. A lot of players assumed Geralt’s story was basically done after Blood and Wine wrapped things up years ago.
Apparently not.
According to CDPR, this new expansion is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory — a studio that already has former Witcher developers working inside it, which explains why the project probably feels “safe” enough for CDPR to revisit.
No story details have been revealed yet, but the title “Songs of the Past” is already fueling theories all over Reddit and gaming forums.
Some players think the expansion could revisit older Witcher characters or unfinished plot threads. Others believe this may act as a bridge between Witcher 3 and the next mainline game.
Either way, Geralt returning wasn’t something most people expected this late into the game’s lifecycle.
Release Date and Platforms
CDPR confirmed the expansion is coming in 2027 for:
- PC
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
No old-gen console versions were mentioned.
And interestingly, there’s still no word on a Nintendo platform release either.
New System Requirements Are Coming Too
Alongside the expansion announcement, CDPR also confirmed that The Witcher 3 will soon receive updated minimum system requirements.
Here’s the important part:
- Windows 10 support is ending
- Windows 11 will become the minimum supported OS
- HDD support is being dropped
- SSD storage will be required
CDPR says the changes are necessary to maintain stability and compatibility going forward, especially with future updates and new content.
Not exactly surprising in 2026, but still worth noting for anyone running older hardware.
Community Reactions Are Already Split
The reactions online have been pretty interesting so far.
A lot of fans are genuinely excited because Witcher 3 is still considered one of the best RPGs ever made. Getting new story content more than a decade later feels kind of unreal.
At the same time, there are players wondering whether this expansion is actually necessary.
Some people think CDPR should focus entirely on The Witcher 4 instead of revisiting old projects. Others are worried the expansion could feel smaller than Blood and Wine or Hearts of Stone.
But honestly? If CDPR manages to capture even a fraction of the atmosphere, writing, and quest quality that made Witcher 3 legendary in the first place, most fans will probably be happy just seeing Geralt back on the Path again.
What Do You Think?
- Good idea bringing Geralt back?
- Can CDPR still deliver classic Witcher-quality storytelling?
- Do you think Songs of the Past will be a full-scale expansion or something smaller?
Curious to see where people stand on this one.
