Would You Trust Your Smartphone as Your Only Car Key?

More car brands are turning smartphones into full car keys through Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet and similar systems.

Convenient? Definitely.

But does anyone else think this could become a bigger security risk over time?

If your phone gets compromised, stolen, infected with malware, or linked accounts get accessed, you’re no longer just losing a phone — potentially your car access is tied to it too.

Supporters say digital keys are actually more secure than traditional key fobs because they use encrypted hardware, biometrics, UWB/NFC technology, and can be remotely disabled if the phone is lost.

Critics point out there are still concerns around phone security, app permissions, account breaches, software vulnerabilities, battery dependence, and future attack methods targeting digital key ecosystems.

Would you trust your smartphone as your primary car key, or would you still want a physical key as backup?
