Is Instagram finally giving users real control over the algorithm?

I’ve been reading about Instagram’s new “Your Algorithm” feature, and honestly, this might be one of the most interesting updates they’ve made in a long time.

For years, one of the biggest complaints about Instagram has been how little control users have over what actually appears in their feeds. The app decides what it thinks you want to see, and sometimes it gets it right, but other times it feels completely disconnected from your actual interests. A lot of people have probably had the experience of interacting with one or two posts about a topic and then suddenly seeing that subject everywhere for weeks.

From what I understand, Instagram is now trying to make that process a little more transparent by letting users view and adjust the interests that influence their recommendations. Instead of relying entirely on the platform to guess what you want, you’ll be able to tell it more directly which topics matter to you and which ones don’t.

In theory, this sounds like a great idea. Recommendation algorithms have become so powerful that they basically shape how millions of people experience social media, yet most users have very little understanding of how those recommendations are made. Giving people more visibility into that process feels like something that should have existed years ago.

At the same time, I’m wondering how much control users will actually have. Social media platforms often introduce customization features that sound great on paper but don’t end up making a huge difference in practice. If adjusting your interests genuinely changes what appears in your feed, Explore page, and Reels recommendations, then this could be a meaningful improvement. If it’s mostly cosmetic, people will probably stop paying attention to it pretty quickly.

Another thing I’m curious about is whether this will help solve the growing frustration many users have with recommendation-heavy feeds. I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t necessarily want better recommendations—they just want to see more content from the accounts they already follow. That’s a slightly different problem, and I’m not sure this feature really addresses it.

I also wonder how this will affect creators. If users start actively customizing their interests, it could make it easier for niche creators to reach the right audience. On the other hand, creators who cover multiple topics might find it harder to get discovered if people become more selective about what they want the algorithm to show them.

One thing worth mentioning is that the rollout doesn’t seem to be available to everyone yet. From what I’ve seen, some users already have access while others don’t, which makes it a bit difficult to judge how effective the feature really is. It sounds like Instagram is rolling it out gradually rather than enabling it for everyone at once.

Overall, I think the idea is promising. For years we’ve heard that algorithms know what users want better than users themselves. This feels like one of the first major attempts to give some of that control back. Whether it actually works is another question entirely.

Has anyone here received the feature yet? If so, have you noticed any real difference in your recommendations, or does Instagram still seem to push whatever it wants regardless of the settings?
